How AI will affect an illustrator’s work

The pace of AI has changed many fields, and illustration is not an exception. It will have a real part in an illustrator’s work. This piece looks at what changes, and what does not.
AI in a graphic designer’s work
Designers can hand routine work to the tools: resizing, choosing colors, lifting a background. The time that comes back is for the design itself.
Assisting tools can read a brand and a brief and offer visual options. The process gets faster. The designer still decides which option is the work.
The skill is not replaced. The designer remains responsible for the visual idea. AI is a tool that helps carry the vision out.
Some routine tasks will be automated. Creative judgment does not go with them. The work changes shape. It does not disappear.
AI in an illustrator’s work
An illustrator can use assisted image tools that recognize what is in a picture and offer filters and effects. The illustrator chooses which of them belong. Time is saved. The range of the picture can stay wide.
The tools can help with a precise or realistic picture. They do not supply the point of view. Intuition stays with the maker. Once the routine is automated, the weight of the job moves to concept: pictures the tool will not make alone.
How illustrators can adapt
The arrival of the tools can feel uncertain. They do not replace the illustrator. Adapting means learning the software that is actually built for the work, and using it on one’s own jobs.
Illustrators can also take part in how the software is made. Taste and craft belong in that development, so the tools answer the work and not only the machine’s defaults.
In short
AI will matter in illustration. It can take the routine, assist the design, and be shaped by the people who use it. It does not replace craft. It changes where the time goes, and what the picture can be.
